CHAPTER TEN
âYouâre certain this is the best move?â His mother didnât glance away from the vase of white roses she arranged on the table.
âIâm certain. I understand things were off to a veryâ¦rough start, but there is a good person within Emma. I think sheâs still just so angry at what she lost.â He sighed. There was no good explanation for why he wanted to help Emma so damn badly.
Except the one, he wasnât thrilled with. Despite her discourteous nature, Christian was fascinated by her. From the moment he caught sight of her in the pub, heâd had thoughts of her. Of course, in the beginning, they were merely his own embarrassment over not realizing sheâd been in a chair, but heâd been excited to help her.
Kane spoke of a person who lived life for others whoâd lost their will to live. While Emma displayed horrid manners, he couldnât help but be intrigued. Christian wanted to help her see the woman his father described as so pure and wonderful because he wanted her to be that woman.
Why? Because sheâs stunningly gorgeous? Christian wasnât shallow, but he couldnât reckon another reason why heâd help such an ill-mannered person.
âHer father did make her seem like quite a lovely person before her accident. Even if I believed we dealt with a young child as well, not a fully grown adult.â She went back to pruning.
âYou havenât brought up Gianna since the disaster that was breakfast. Why?â
âBecause youâre doing what I asked and trying. Plus, Emma has shown me how truly lucky I am to have a son putting others first. I want you to put yourself first. However, seeing Emma only putting energy out there for herself, well, I donât need you hating life that much.â
Christian winced, understanding where his mother came from but wishing she hadnât said what she said.
âItâs not that I donât like Gianna. When sheâs not trying to impress me, sheâs someone I could see myself being around. Sheâs so stuck on being a Queen, though. Like all those young women you see in movies. I donât doubt she has a wonderful heart, but she doesnât want this relationship for the right reasons.â
âAnd that is fine. Youâve done what I asked. I will back off where it concerns Gianna if you assure me you will continue to entertain proper women and think of yourself and the country. Not to mention your dear old mother.â She looked at him then, grinning so wide her cheeks could have torn. âI meant when I said Iâd like to stop worrying about things. Youâre a wonderful ruler, but the country needs balance.â
Christian didnât speak right away. Emma held his attention at the moment. He could pretend it was only to help her, but he wasnât a fool.
If Gianna hadnât arrived at the exact moment in time she had, Christian would have kissed the irate American.
Emma Jelling was the opposite of everything his mother meant when she used phrases like âproper women.â Still, Christian couldnât shake his desire to be near her.
